William James Adams Jr., better known by his stage name will.i.am, was born in Los Angeles, California, on March 15, 1975. He was raised in the Estrada Courts housing projects in Boyle Heights, where he and his family were among the few African Americans living in a predominantly Hispanic community. Adams’ great-great-grandmother was a slave, and his father, William Adams Sr., is someone he has never met.

He was raised by his mother, Debra, who encouraged him to be unique and avoid conforming to the tendencies of the other youths in East L.A. She sent him to affluent West Los Angeles public schools to promote his musical career.
