Early Life
Sean Combs, also known as Puff Daddy, was born on November 4th, 1969, in Harlem, New York. His mother, Janice (née Smalls), worked as a model and teacher’s assistant, while his father, Melvin Earl Combs, was an associate of convicted New York drug dealer Frank Lucas. At the age of 33, his father was murdered in East Harlem. Sean saw himself having to step up and become the man of the house at a young age. He began selling drugs at the age of 12 to make ends meet for his family, but he always had a love and passion for music.
He would attend Mount Saint Michael Academy, where he played football and ran track. After graduating from high school, Sean enrolled at Howard University, although he did not last long before dropping out after just one semester. While at Howard University, he became friends with Andre Harrell, who would later find Uptown Records.

Career
Sean’s career in the music industry started when he interned at Uptown Records. He was later promoted to A&R, where he helped scout new talent and produce records. Some of the artists Sean worked with include Mary J Blige and Jodeci.
His big break came when he was tasked with producing Biggie Smalls’ debut album, Ready to Die. The album’s success catapulted Sean into the spotlight and led to him setting up his label, Bad Boy Records.
Bad Boy Records went on to sign some of the biggest names in hip hop including The Notorious B.I.G, Craig Mack, Faith Evans, 112 and Total. As well as producing records, Sean also found success as a rapper with his debut album No Way Out going platinum seven times in the US. He has since released a further five studio albums with his most recent being 2015’s MMM (Money Making Mitch).

Sean Combs graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy in 1987. His team won the division title when he played football for the academy. Combs studied business at Howard University but left after his sophomore year.
